Swings not a big hit

During the last two weeks, I have been discussing sleep with any Mommy I see whose baby is 4 months old, or has ever been 4 months old. Â One of the pieces of advice we got is to stop swaddling since she is already not sleeping well, and that it might take her about 1.5 nights to stop sleeping better without the swaddling. Â That seems to have worked last night (second night of no swaddling). Â
Based on discussions with one of my running partners, we also decided to start sleep training by letting her cry it out for 20 minutes before we come rescue her from her crib. Â (We figure she might benefit from knowing how to fall asleep by herself – good life skill to have.) Â Last night, we found that she only cried on her back, but not on her side. Â For about 20 minutes, she would change positions from back to side and back again – only crying when on her back. Â She fell asleep by herself last night. Â This morning, after eating, Mommy put her into her crib. Â She promptly turned to her side and fell asleep. Â Go Abi! Â She is a fast learner!
Anyway, last night she only woke up twice when she was hungry, and promptly went back to sleep after eating. Â So Mommy is feeling much better. Â Unfortunately, Mommy was tossing and turning around 4AM (because she was not used to being asleep then and was also hungry) – so Daddy did not sleep particularly well. Â
Mommy is hopeful for tonight.
At one point, she was playing in the ballpit, and an older girl came up to her and started pulling on her shirt. Â The girl’s mother saw this, but did nothing. Â The girl then jumped into the ballpit, and she was clearly a hazard to Abi because she was trying to swim in the pit, throwing about her legs and arms. Â Her mother again did nothing. Â What’s wrong with people? Â (Abi left the ballpit, and was not hurt.)
The last two weeks have been horrible sleep-wise. As an example, last night I slept in three spurts: for two hours, for a little over an hour, and for less than an hour, respectively. Â Daddy has not been getting any more sleep than that either.
Abi is also pooped from all the effort it takes to keep us up at night. This morning, she fell asleep (standing) in her jumper.
Every so often, I would put Abi flat on her back in her crib and leave her room. Â I would then come back, and find that she was at an angle to the position in which I left her. Â Yesterday, I put her flat down, about a forearm’s distance from my iPhone (used to play white noise). Â Within a few hours, she was just 1-2 inches away from it. Â
Well, the mystery was solved today. Â Laying flat on her back, Abi maneuvers with her heels. Â I saw her move about 1/4 a foot forward while laying on her back today – she just pushed with her heels.
Daddy reports that he saw Abi crawl a very short distance backwards.
Dear Abi-
Have fun tomorrow celebrating Mommy’s birthday. Hope you get to do some of your favorite things together. Remember to give Mommy and extra hug from Grandma and Grandpa.
